Our story

Por Legal began with a question we heard again and again: “What is happening with my case?”

Where we come from

Built around the people we serve

Newhope Immigrant is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in City of Industry, California. Its work has always centered on the people who need help the most: new immigrants, low-income and indigent individuals and families, and others who are easily left behind.

Many of the people who come to us are Chinese-speaking, and some have limited formal education. Letters from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or the immigration court arrive in English and are full of legal terms. An online case status can change without any explanation. Our clients relied on us to read those notices with them, to keep track of their cases, and to tell them what each change meant.

As more people asked for help, we wanted a name that clients could remember and trust, and a way of working that could reach more people without losing the personal touch. That is how Por Legal was born: the name under which Newhope Immigrant offers its immigration legal services, bringing caring people and modern tools together.

For you

In Spanish, “por” means “for” and “on behalf of.” We stand with our clients and work on their behalf.

Portal

An open door

“Por” also echoes “portal.” We want to be the open door through which new immigrants find clear, reliable legal help.

破

Breaking through

To Chinese speakers, “Por” sounds like 破 (pò), “to break through.” We help clients break through barriers of language and information.

A new sunrise

Our sunrise logo reflects the name Newhope Immigrant: every case is a chance for a new beginning and a new hope.
